BEEFY STEPS OUT TO CELEBRATE 25 YEARS OF WALKING

FOR LEUKAEMIA RESEARCH

Twenty five years after his first legendary walk from John O’Groats to Land’s End, Sir Ian Botham will set out again for blood cancer charity Leukaemia Research.

The cricket legend will be dusting off his trainers once more for ‘Beefy’s Great Forget Me Not Walk’ and he is asking people to join him and help the fight against childhood leukaemia.

In 1985, when Beefy first started walking for Leukaemia Research, the survival rate for the most common form of childhood leukaemia was just 20 per cent. Now the survival rate is 90 per cent.

Sir Ian, President of Leukaemia Research, says: “My walk in 2010 will be extra special for me as it marks 25 years since I did my first walk, and also the 50th birthday for Leukaemia Research.

“I never forget why I put myself through the pain and blisters. Sign up and join me on the walk and help ensure that every child diagnosed with one of these cancers will survive. I won’t stop until we beat childhood leukaemia, but I can’t do it without you.”

Beefy will be walking through ten towns over ten days from 10-19 April. Each day he will complete an approximate 10-mile route starting from the local Marks & Spencer in the town centre before joining people who have raised sponsorship in a local park.

The route will take in:

10 April - Manchester (Heaton Park)

11 April – Birmingham (Sutton Park)

12 April – Worcester (Croome Park)

13 April – Bristol (Ashton Court Estate)

14 April – Winchester (Mottisfont Abbey)

15 April – Epsom (Epsom Racecourse)

16 April - Reading (Thames Tow Path)

17 April – Milton Keynes (Willen Lake & Campbell Park)

18 April – Chelmsford (Hylands Park)

19 April – London (Hyde Park)

Sir Ian says: “I need people to sign up now and make this my best walk ever.” Places on each stage of the walk will fill up quickly. If you would like to join Sir Ian on one of his walks please contact Botham Walk Fundraising Coordinator David Blandford on 020 7685 5143 or email beefy25@llresearch.org.uk  or visit www.beefy25.com.

Marks & Spencer is sponsoring the event and will be providing clothing for the crew and refreshments throughout the walk. Hotel du Vin is giving Ian and his team accommodation en route. Jaguar is providing support vehicles for Beefy and his crew during the walk.
